A Mother’s Story: My Son’s Moving Battle with AIDS

It’s as a mother that I’d like to share with you the key aspects of my experience, and that of my son, with HIV/AIDS.

Since being diagnosed a few years ago, Steven has struggled with illnesses related to his condition: Kaposi’s sarcoma, AIDS-related dementia, multiple pulmonary embolisms, and a rare form of epilepsy, among many others. During this time, he endured many treatments and surgery that required long hospital stays.

In December 2015, the medical team informed us that Steven should be transferred to a residence that specialized in the care and support of people living with HIV/AIDS. That’s how we came across Maison d’Hérelle.

Since then, Steven has lived in a peaceful, stress-free environment. His medications are administered in a timely manner. The staff and volunteers are invaluable, professional, caring, and always available. The colourful family dining room is inviting, and the food is always healthy and delicious. I often join Steven for a meal. The lounge and rooftop patio give us a place to relax and recharge when we need to.

Last summer, Steven had the opportunity to spend a week at summer camp, which he enjoyed so much that he asked if he could go again next year. He also joined a gym near Maison d’Hérelle where he goes sometimes with a caregiver or volunteer. Several of his friends come to visit him and he really appreciates that.

As I write this testimonial, Steven’s battle continues. He is back in the hospital with a fractured femur that occurred six weeks after hip replacement surgery. I can rest easy knowing that Steven will return to his room at Maison d’Hérelle when he’s discharged from the hospital…soon, I hope.  I know he is treated with kindness and respect at d’Hérelle – he will always receive the best care there. For a long time, too long, HIV/AIDS has caused suffering and upheaval. We are fortunate to still have a place like this to ease the pain and agony of those affected and their loved ones.

Sincerely,

Victoria B.Mother of a Maison d’Hérelle resident
